Through the years of playing on Beatnik servers, we've all seen the AI do some really crazy stuff. I was talking to Sandman about this and he explained that this is called "Emergent AI Behavior" which means: a system that does not depend on its individual parts, but on their relationships to one another. Thus emergent behavior cannot be predicted by examination of a system's individual parts. So, these wacky things the AI do are not coded. I've often said the AI were evolving, I guess that was almost right!
